Mount Toro, the highest in Menorca

The history of this place
Mount Toro is the highest point on the island of Menorca and is 358 meters above sea level.
At its top we can find the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Mount Toro, run by the nuns of the Franciscan Order until 2018.

This sanctuary was built where we can find a wood carving representing the Virgin who, according to legend, appeared there.
History says that many years ago, a bull guarded the top of this mountain and did not allow the passage to those who dared to approach it.
Some monks went up there, attracted by the mysterious lights that shine at night in Mount Toro.
When the bull warned them, he went out to meet them and chased them away, but when he saw them carrying the crosses.
His attitude changed, and he gently guided them to a cave where they found the image of a virgin, known since then as Nuestra Señora del Toro.
Another option that would explain the name of this popular place would be the word “tor” which comes from Arabic.
And means things that are high or elevated.
How can you get to the Mount Toro viewpoint
To climb Mount Toro you must start from Es Mercadal, the closest town.
The viewpoint is located approximately 3 kilometers from this town and can be accessed by taking a walk of about an hour or in 5 minutes by car.
Access is not very complicated and at the top there is a parking lot where you can park your car so if you have rented one with us you have no excuse to miss this wonderful excursion.
